Fredericksburg Branch

September: Edward RussellSummer Trees by Edward Russell

Mr. Russell enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, and he served in World War II in both the European and Pacific chapters.  He retired from the U.S. Government in 1983, after serving thirty-three years as Director-Curator of the U.S. Army Engineer Museum in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Throughout his life, Mr. Russell was passionate about the world of art.  In 1932, under the tutorage of an older brother, he began studies in drawing.  Until his death in April of 2016, Mr. Russell continued to be devoted to the study of art and painted as often as time allowed.

The Canyon by Rachel Hicks
Salem Church Branch

September: Rachel Hicks

Rachel Hicks is a resident artist living in Fredericksburg, Virginia. This prolific and bright artist creates in a variety of sizes but prefers large scale and mural style work. Currently experimenting with acrylic, her subject matter ranges from abstracts, to romanticized animals and delicate bones, to emotionally intense portraits. With a concentration on lively color coordination and subtle details her work is highly recognizable. Her recent works have been influenced by the Southwest region of the United States. They incorporate deep siennas and vibrant blues, topographical orientations, and geometric backgrounds. She looks to artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Craig Kosak, Joel Rea and Nocona Burgess for visual inspiration always trying to “paint the things that people forget to see.”
