The Bad Beginning (Book One in A Series of Unfortunate Events)
After the sudden death of their parents, the three Baudelaire children must depend on each other and their wits when it turns out that the distant relative who is appointed their guardian is determined to use any means necessary to get their fortune. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent childrenThe Bad Beginning (Book One in A Series of Unfortunate Events) . They are charming, and resourceful, and have pleasant facial features. Unfortunately, they are exceptionally unlucky. Imagine tales so terrible that as many as fifty million innocents have been ruined by them-tales so indelibly horrid that the New York Times bestseller list has been unable to rid itself of them for seven years. Now imagine if this scourge suddenly became available in a shameful new edition so sensational, so irresistible, so riddled with lurid new pictures that even a common urchin would wish for it. Who among us would be safe?

Cover to Is It Passover Yet? By Chris Barash, with pictures by Alessandra Psacharopulo

Chris Barash’s Is It Passover Yet? is a sweet and gentle choice for young children who are excited as Passover draws near. Through simple rhyming text and bright, clear pictures, we first see the signs of spring—animals frisking and plants growing. Then, we see a human family is getting ready for a special time, too. They clean the house together and make traditional dishes for their expected visitors.

Book Corner: Women’s Stories Inspire, Ignite Dreams

Children are big dreamers, but it can be hard for them to sustain those dreams when faced with adversity or even just plain apathy they sometimes face.  I am especially reminded of this now, during Women’s History Month, when I am reading about women throughout history who had to fight hard to achieve their goals and dreams, and thinking about how hearing these stories can inspire children today to keep pursuing their dreams.  Children can see in these tenacious women examples of what is possible with hard work and dedication.
