My Awesome Summer by P. Mantis

On May 17, a beautiful spring day, P. Mantis is born. On October 17, she lies down to “take a long nap” and says “Good-bye!” What happens in-between is her Awesome Summer.

The first thing you will notice when you open this picture book are all the praying mantis facts. The facts are different inside the front and back covers, so you will want to read both sides. But you don’t need to read those to enjoy P. Mantis’ story, though the facts will help you understand it better.

June is National Audio Book Month! So, to celebrate, throw some headphones into your beach bag. A great story is the perfect soundtrack to any summer adventure.

Because I love audiobooks and can’t resist sharing my favorites, I’ve gathered a list of great audiobooks for summer. The list includes fantasy and science fiction, memoir and family drama—all with compelling plots and page-turning appeal to keep you listening through the dog days to come.

Whether you’ve got a pool nearby or just a yard and a hose, you can have fun staying cool in the sun with outdoor water games.

Depending on the game you pick, you may also want to have buckets, sponges, water balloons, and maybe even a watermelon. Water games are a great way to end a long day outside or to make into the center of a summertime party. You can also take some games and turn them into a water-based Olympics.

Porter’s Saturday Matinee Movie: The Secret Garden

Mary Lennox arrives at Misselthwaite Manor in the dead of winter, an angry orphan with serious trust issues. Everything at the Yorkshire estate seems closed off to her. And there are secrets. A mysterious cousin, a distant uncle, and a separate, walled-off garden—to which she’s found the key.

Good Books, Good Friends

With summer coming and schools being out, remember that you do not want your child to be without books. Students who do not have books to read over vacation often suffer a downhill slide in skills. Without keeping up with their reading, they may spend that first month back at school trying to catch up on skills they haven't practiced.

The best craft store may be right outside your door. This summer, take time in the cool mornings to gather together pieces of nature to work into craft projects in the afternoons. That way you’ll have a remembrance of summer to keep all year long. Rocks can become patterned pictures. Leaves can make delicate prints. Everything in nature can inspire your arts and crafts.
